Mode conditioning patch cord is utilized when the transceiver modules launch only singlemode (1300um) singnals but the existing network is built with multimode cables.

DMD(Differential Mode Delay) can raise multiple signals within the multimode fiber when a singlemode signal is launched into a multimode fiber. This effect can confuse the receiver and produce errors. Mode conditioning cables utilize an offset between the singlemode fiber and the multimode fiber to eliminate DMD and make it allowed to use 1000BASE-LX over existing multimode fiber cable systems.
